Pregnancy & Varicosis
The venous
system is subject to twice the normal strain during
pregnancy. The veins have to transport an increased
volume of blood and the higher concentration of
progestterone has a negative effect on them.
This hormone
causes the bodies connective tissue to relax, a vital
preparation for giving birth but not so advantageous for the
legs. Their connective tissue is looser to.
A further
complication arises from the enlarged womb. This puts
additional pressure on the veins in the pelvis and obstructs
the flow of blood back to the heart. Frequently the
first spider or varicose veins appear during
pregnancy.
They often
disappear, at least in part, after the first child is
born. The risk of venous disorders increses with the
number of pregnancies.
What this means
is that preventative measures are particulary important
during pregnancy. Over this relatively short period of
time, women can do a lot to prevent venous disorders in
later years.
