Venous Self Help
Your veins have to work hard each day.
Exercising such as regular walking, jogging, swimming or
cycling supports the function of your veins and does your legs
and body good as well.
Weight reduction helps to ease varicose veins by reducing
pressure on the vascular system. Many people see a dramatic
improvement after losing as little as 8 -14 pounds. Exercise is
a big help for anyone suffering from varicose veins or other
circulatory problems. It helps to pump blood around the body
and maintain good circulation.
In chronic cases of varicose veins, injection therapy or
vascular surgery to remove or divide varicose veins, may be
necessary. Please refer to your doctor for more
information.
Here are some of the golden
rules for healthy veins.
1) Exercise as often as possible
2) Where possible, avoid long periods of standing or
sitting still
3) Do leg exercises where possible (try cycling your
legs before you get out of bed)
4) Put your feet up as often as possible, especially
at night
5) Avoid extreme heat in the sun, sauna or
solarium
6) Avoid wearing tight fitting
clothes
7) Keep to a high fibre diet and make sure that you
drink enough fluids
8) Lose any excess weight
Additional Measures: What can
be done
In addition to the wearing of gradient compression by
means of medical hosiery, there are other forms of venous
disorder management.
Physical therapy - The use of water to help
provide relief for venous conditions
Exercise therapy - Set a regular exercise
plan
Medicinal therapy - The use of drugs to
treat venous disorders
Sclerotherapy - An injection treatment for
smaller superficial varicose veins
Vein surgery - The removal or obliteration
of varicose veins
