Yeast Infections, Symptoms and Treatment.

Vaginal yeast infection, which is the most common form of vaginitis, is often referred to as vaginal Candidiasis . Vaginal discharge is not always present, and may only occur in small amounts. The thick, whitish-gray discharge is typically described as cottage cheese-like, although it can vary from watery to thick. Vaginal yeast infection is suggested when a cheesy white discharge is noted over the walls of the vagina, but the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection are nonspecific and may be a result of other conditions. To firmly establish the diagnosis and to rule out any other causes of the symptoms, your doctor may take a specimen scraped from the affected area for microscopic analysis or for culture in the laboratory.

Vaginal discharge is not always present and may be minimal. The thick, whitish-gray discharge is typically described as cottage-cheese-like in nature, although it can vary from watery to thick in consistency. Vaginal treatment takes three to seven days. There is also a single dose pill that can be taken orally, but it may take several days for the infection to resolve after taking the pill. Vaginal infections can also be caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common cause of vaginitis in women of childbearing age, and trichomoniasis , a sexually transmitted infection. BV and trichomoniasis are associated with more serious reproductive health conditions.

Treatment is by topical or oral antifungal medications. Acidophilous, a helpful bacteria that normally helps to keep yeast in check, can also be tried in supplement form or in yogurt with live cultures. Treatments come in a wide range of forms including pills and vaginal creams, which may need to be taken anywhere from one dose to a week-long course of medication. While some treatments are prescribed by a doctor, many are available over the counter. Treatment of sexual partners is usually not recommended. It is not clear if vaginal yeast infections are transmitted sexually.

Oral antibiotics for yeast vaginitis include fluconazole (Diflucan). During pregnancy, only the topical creams are used. Oral medication needs to be prescribed and may contain fluconazole. You may want to stick to the name brands until you figure out what works for you.

Women experiencing persistent vaginal yeast overgrowth who are using a cervical cap or diaphragm, need to wash and dry it well after use. Some women have found relief from tenacious conditions with the "sucking air" method of douching. Women with immune system deficiencies, such as AIDS; women who are pregnant; and women with uncontrolled diabetes may also get repeated yeast infections. Women who are pregnant , have diabetes , or have immunosuppression are at higher risk of vaginal yeast infections. They are not a sexually transmitted disease.
