Fasting Delivers Weight Loss Results
Posted by in Weight Loss on July 29th, 2010
No word can produce more fear, emotion and misunderstanding in the world of diet and weight loss than fasting. The term conjures up visions of starving for days and weeks without a morsel of food, and drinking only fruit juices. A traditional fast is controversial and possibly even unhealthy for certain people, but intermittent fasting relies on the emerging weight loss science of calorie restriction.
According to Scientific American, weight loss is less about what you eat, and more about the timing of each meal. Effective weight loss is possible when you eat according to your genes, more along the lines of our evolutionary ancestors when food was scarce and people rarely ate more than once a day, and more often every few days.
It’s important to understand that eating stimulates many biological events in our body, most of which have evolved to store energy as fat. For this reason, the type of food we eat and the timing of meals are critically important to meet our weight loss goals.
Intermittent Fasting Fuels Fat Burn
Intermittent fasting does not involve starving for days on end, but rather works in harmony with the body’s normal circadian rhythms. There are two types of intermittent fasting. The first involves a liquid diet for one day of the week, with normal eating on the remaining days.
The second method consists of non-caloric fluids only between 7 PM and 7AM each day, with 3 nutritionally fortified, reduced calorie meals balanced over the remaining 12 hours. This is the recommended method of intermittent fasting, and most people find this form easier to tolerate as you’ll be sleeping for a good portion of the 12 hour fast cycle.
Fast for 12 Hours, Eat for 12 Hours
When the body is not busy with the complex process of digestion, it’s free to perform many critical tasks which are vital to our long term health and weight loss goals. Eating large, highly refined meals several times a day forces our metabolism to stay in high gear processing the excess surge of calories.
Intermittent fasting for 12 hours a day, and especially curtailing meals or snacking after 7 PM will force our body to rely on fat stores for energy during the overnight hours. For many people, this is the boost they need to effectively and naturally drop their weight into a normal range.
Make Wise Food Choices
Technically, fasting doesn’t require a special diet, but proper food choices are critical to hitting and maintain your weight loss target. The total amount of calories we eat, timing of meals and nutritional balance of our food all affect our metabolism and the way we store or release fat. In effect, we control our weight destiny through food and physical activity. Nothing impacts our weight, body shape and health more than the foods we eat.
Limit Calories and Make Them Count
Intermittent fasting is a tool which can be used as part of your weight loss arsenal, but reduced calories and nutritional balance are the foundation blocks to sustaining your target weight goal. You’ll naturally reduce calories by restricting food to 12 hours each day, but you also need to limit total quantities and make them well balanced from all food groups. Men need to limit daily calories to 1800 and women to 1500, with slight adjustments being made for extremely active individuals.
Intermittent fasting is founded on the science of human metabolism, as it relies on the body’s evolved responses to food to achieve improved health. Limit total calories and eat only during the morning, afternoon and early evening hours, allowing for a 12 hour fast each day. By working in harmony with the body’s normal rhythms, you’ll be rewarded with naturally sustainable weight loss for life.

How to Drop Pregnancy Weight
Posted by in Weight Loss on July 29th, 2010
Pregnancy sees a lot of changes to the body, including significant weight gain. These additional pounds are essential to support that growing baby within. However, once the baby is born, shedding the excess pounds can be easier said than done. There are many obstacles that get in the way of losing weight at this time of life. An effective weight loss program will address those obstacles and work around them to help you meet your weight loss goals.
Obstacle #1 I don’t have time to work out.
This is the most common reason moms don’t get around to taking off the pregnancy weight. It is certainly valid; moms have a full time job taking care of kids and a house every day. If that mom is juggling a career along with her mom duties, extra time becomes even scarcer. It is important to find a weight loss program that allows a mom to work her workout routine around the rest of her life. This ensures the program will be adhered to long enough for her to reach her weight loss goals.
Obstacle #2 I don’t have the energy to work out.
Being a mom is exhausting on the good days, and more challenging times leave absolutely no extra energy for anything, especially exercise. This makes it difficult to stick with a workout program long enough to see results. The best weight loss program will offer some quick methods for boosting the metabolism so moms can find the necessary energy to exercise. It will do so through natural methods like diet and exercise, rather than artificially stimulating the metabolism with supplements that contain potentially dangerous ingredients.
Obstacle #3 Nothing I try seems to work.
There are a lot of ineffective weight loss programs out there today, which can discourage even the most motivated of moms looking to shed pounds. Why don’t they work? There can be a number of reasons. Many programs are too complicated to figure out and stick with. It may take too long to see results, which leaves participants frustrated, discouraged and unmotivated. They quickly drop out of the program, and then feel guilty about their lack of success. This process feeds on itself, until moms believe there is absolutely nothing that will help them lose weight. An effective program will bust through the myths and help participants see quick results that will motivate them to keep going.
Obstacle #4 My bad habits sabotage my efforts.
Most women develop habits during pregnancy that make it more challenging to lose weight after the fact. Giving in to food cravings a putting your feet up in front of the television at night instead of taking a walk are just a couple. An effective weight loss program will help you break those bad habits and develop new routines that will set you up for success. Good habits will boost your metabolism, minimize food cravings and burn your fat for results you can see.
There are effective programs that address these obstacles and help women overcome them. These programs are the solution for women who want to shed pregnancy weight and simply don’t know how to succeed.

Controversies Cleared About the Hoodia Extract
Posted by in Weight Loss on July 28th, 2010
Nowadays, you can purchase hoodia extract from many health food stores and sites. You will often be hard-pressed to choose the best one considering that all of these hoodia extract brands promise the same thing – safe, fast and effective weight loss. Well, there are things that you must know about these products made from the extract of the hoodia plant.
First and foremost, when you see the word hoodia extract on the label, you must beware as this is not the most effective hoodia product available in the market today. It means that the weight loss supplement only contains the extract of the plant and, thus, not as pure as the price warrants.
This is because many of the hoodia extract products consist only of 60 percent material from the hoodia plant while the other 40 percent are fillers, additives and preservatives. You want to purchase 100 percent genuine products with 100 percent plant components.
But it is not just any part of the plant that we are talking about. Many of the hoodia extract products contain significant percentages of their ingredients from the leaves and stems of the Hoodia gordonii plant, which are not the most effective parts.
It is the core of the hoodia plant that contains the potent appetite suppressant known as the P57. Many of the products labeled as hoodia extract may not even contain this matter!
This is the reason why the San Bushmen of the Kalahari peeled off the spines and skins of the hoodia plant to get at its heart, which was then eaten prior to long hunting trips. It was very effective in suppressing their hunger for food and thirst for water in the often-barren conditions of the great Kalahari. So, the San Bushmen benefited from the core of the plant, not just from the hoodia extract from the leaves and stems.
In the concrete jungle that we call the city, it may not be possible to do as the San Bushmen do with the cacti-like plant. Instead, we have to settle for the second-best but still highly effective hoodia products. The trick is in choosing the right product without the words hoodia extract in it.
In this case, we strongly suggest looking at the label of the product. If it contains the word hoodia extract, then it is most probably fake and, thus, ineffective in weight loss. You might as well be taking placebos for all the good that it does to your weight loss plans.
The genuine hoodia products only contain a few very select ingredients – the core of the Hoodia gordonii and gelatin. On one hand, the hoodia core provides the P57, which is a potent appetite suppressant with possible thermogenic properties coupled with energy-enhancing and metabolism-boosting capabilities. A product containing just the hoodia extract will not deliver these benefits.
On the other hand, the gelatin component holds the hoodia ingredient together without interfering with its efficacy. Plus, it makes for a more palatable feeling to the capsule. Of course, hoodia weight loss supplements that come in liquid form like teas do not contain gelatin, just the hoodia itself. Again, the hoodia extract from leaves and stems will simply not do.
Keep in mind, nonetheless, that hoodia extract or not, hoodia is just a weight loss aid. It is not the be-all and end-all of successful weight loss.

Healthy Diet for Healthy Weight Loss
Posted by in Weight Loss on July 28th, 2010
Sometimes people who want to be slimmer suffer a lot of misfortunes for their quest to an effective weight loss. They have already tried a lot of things to lose weight—from simple physical exercises to vigorous workouts, from taking slimming pills to risky liposuction—but in effect none resulted to their desired body still. The problem is they often simply forgot the main ingredient to any weight loss program—a healthy diet.
Let us say for example, you committed to run everyday expecting for a quick weight loss. But because running makes you dreadfully tired and hungry, you cannot keep yourself from eating more. You treat yourself a bottle of soda to quench your thirst, take a quarter-pounder burger to satisfy your belly, and a pint of ice cream to regain your energy. Well, no thanks to running because it actually did not serve its purpose.
Like a piece of cheesecake that goes perfectly with blueberries, exercise is best served along with the right diet. One cannot expect weight loss without the discipline of eating right. It is definitely important not to take what you are digesting for granted because it will break or make your plan of making the weighing scale’s hand go down.
So to get you started, plan your daily exercise with a healthy diet meal. Here are the food groups which can healthily provide what you need:
• Healthy Carbohydrates
Some opt for low-carbohydrate diet but proper amount of it helps in weight loss. These includes fruits, vegetable, whole grains and beans
• Healthy Fats
Fats are what we fight in here but good fats promote weight loss, believe it or not. Unrefined, no cholesterol vegetable oils, olive oils and canola oils have low-calorie fats and are not risky for the health.
• Healthy Protein
Protein gives energy and it is not that good to totally avoid it. There are foods with healthy protein like fish, lean beef, chicken, beans and soy foods that keeps your energy so you can do your daily exercises.
• Sugar
Healthy diet does not prevent intake of sugar. On the contrary, the body needs glucose as source of energy. But to be able to reduce some weight, it is better to take fewer sweets as it is also important for diet compliance.
• Dairy Products
Some diets forbid dairy products during a plan of weight loss because it is high in fat. But dairy products adequately nourish the body with calcium. So with less fat found in cottage cheese, low fat milk and non-fat butter would do no harm in your plans.
• Dietary Fiber
Fibers are the most important food group in a diet program. Both soluble and insoluble fibers found in beans, oats, apple, banana, nuts, seeds, grains and cereals assists in proper digestion for healthy weight loss.
