The Growing Problem Of Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is one of the major problems facing the children of today. It is not only a health and weight issue, but it also creates social problems too. Many children who suffer from obesity will bear the brunt of cruel jokes at school and feel alone and in despair. Physical education classes will be a nightmare which they will try to avoid at all costs. They may find it difficult to make friends and the situation just gradually gets worse instead of better.

As a parent, it is your responsibility to help your child to eat a healthy diet and keep an active lifestyle. It is up to you to support your child and be a suitable role model for them to follow. Overweight children are most often the result of overweight parents.

With all of the technological wizardry and games available to children today, it is all too easy for them to sit in front of a games console or computer screens playing virtual games and snacking, instead of being outside, in the fresh air, playing physical games and interacting with real people, as children did only a couple of decades ago. The idea of ‘going out to play’ seems completely foreign to many of today’s kids, but this is so important for the health and development of your child.

As a family it is important that you encourage outdoor activities, take your children to the park on a sunny afternoon, go on family bike rides, start swimming, anything to encourage your children to exercise, gradually at first. You will find that the more you do, the more you will want to do, and it is great for family morale to participate in these activities together, as well as individual health.

Also, take a long hard look in your kitchen cupboards. If they are full of sugary snacks and processed junk food, throw it out. Encourage a healthy diet, lots of fruit instead of chocolate bars, lots of vegetables instead of crisps, water or fruit juice instead of fizzy pop. It’s up to you to take the initiative and they will follow. Next time you make up their lunchbox; don’t add any crisps, biscuits or cakes. A healthy sandwich, a piece of fruit and a yoghurt, for example, is nutritious, delicious and will actually help them to concentrate more on the remaining lessons of the day.

Go on, take the initiative and you’ll all feel healthier and happier for it.

An Easy Guide to Losing Weight Quickly and Naturally

Have you ever noticed that animals don’t have problems with being overweight? I’m not talking about pets kept by humans, I’m talking about wild animals living in their natural habitat. Have you also noticed whenever you see television programmes, which show tribes of Indians living in the Amazon Rain Forest or some other remote place, that they too never seem to have members suffering from obesity?

Obesity is a man made problem. In the late 20th Century we became very good at processing goods and one of the main things we began to process was food. Fast food joints sprung up here there and everywhere in western societies. Burger joints, deep fried chicken restaurants, fish and chip shops and hot dog stalls became part of everyday life.

We also became very good at manufacturing goods to make life easier such as cars and washing machines and products to entertain us such as televisions, DVD players, and computer games consoles. Again these became part of everyday life and this resulted in the amount of natural exercise we do being drastically reduced. And now in the early part of this century, obesity has also become a feature of everyday life.

The reason that people living in societies where fast food is still unavailable don’t suffer from obesity is simply because they are surrounded only by natural products and their diet is made up entirely of natural foods. They eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and nuts. They also get plenty of exercise by using walking and running as a means of transport and by playing physical games as a form of entertainment.

So it stands to reason that if you want to lose weight naturally, you need to get back to nature. Now of course I’m not suggesting you go and live in the rain forest and survive on fruit and nuts, that would be a little extreme, I’m sure you’d agree. What I am suggesting though is that you make some small changes to your lifestyle to get yourself back towards where we used to be as human beings before we invented obesity.

The first place to start is by cutting out as much processed food as possible from your daily diet. Don’t buy ready packaged meals. Buy fresh meat, fish fruit and vegetables and cook them yourself without adding salt. Above all, avoid the fast foods joints, stay well clear of the hamburgers, hot dogs and fries.

Try to eat six small meals each day instead of three larger ones. If you need to snack in between meals, eat nuts or a piece of fruit instead of crisps and chocolate. Another trick is to drink plenty of water (about 8 glasses everyday).

The other thing you need to do is to get some natural exercise. Now don’t worry, I’m not talking about spending hours toiling in the gym. A brisk 30-45 minute walk, three times a week is a great way to get started. Try walking a pleasant route that you know you’ll enjoy, that way you’re more likely to do it again. You can increase the length of each walk or the number of times you do it each week as your body becomes accustomed to the exercise.

Simply by putting these ideas into practice and getting back to a more natural lifestyle, you will be able to control your weight much easier and feel much healthier as well.
