Anorexia, commonly known as ‘slimming disease’ is an eating disorder which most commonly occurs in teenage girls. Although it can be responsible for causing dreadful physical and emotional harm, it is curable in many cases, and the earlier it is treated the more chance there is of a full recovery. There are statistics which indicate that 80% of people who have been affected by anorexia can make a complete recovery if given the correct professional counselling and emotional help and support from close family members.
If you suspect a loved one or a member of your family is developing any of the symptoms of anorexia, it is important to try and get help immediately before any lasting damage can be done. It is most common in teenage girls, and while it is widely believed that anorexics do not eat, this is completely untrue. The belief that their body is fat and ugly means that the sufferer will stop eating anything which they can believe will make them fat, and will often turn to vegetarianism as a first sign. They will eat such a small amount to keep alive, but they will eat something.
There is also a possibility of the occasional binge and purge, where they will eat an excessive amount of food and then rid themselves of it immediately afterwards, either by making themselves sick or the use of laxatives. This is, however, behaviour more common in bulimia. The two diseases are often confused, and though they indicate the same underlying problems of low self-worth and belief, they are quite different in other ways.
Anyone suffering from anorexia will lose weight extremely quickly, and therefore it ought to be quite easy to identify. If a member of your family starts to display any of these signs, then you are strongly advised to seek medical help as soon as possible. They may possibly try to hide this from you by wearing baggy clothes, and try to avoid eating out at family social occasions so that they don’t put themselves into an awkward position.

Achieving Weight Loss Goals With a Good Diet Plan

Sticking to a diet plan is not easy at the best of times, no matter how motivated you are. Some days it can seem like the whole world is conspiring, in the most well meaning way, to make you eat just the things that your diet plan says that you are forbidden to be eating. The common things that can happen to make you stray from a diet plan include social events where food and drinks are served, and especially some formal occasions where there is a set meal and drinks are included. Usually it is better to eat less during the day and then you can eat whatever is offered without upsetting your diet plan. Neighbors make cakes and biscuits, and bringing a plate to social meetings is very often done. Food, for better or worse, is part of our community life. It is not too surprising when you realize how much food is a part of entertaining that so many people do have problems with their weight.
The fact of life is that there is a lot of extremely tasty food around and most social events include drinks and eating food. To continue with a diet plan and to keep in the social swim you might have to compromise your strict diet plan on occasions. Sometimes people can be very upset if you don’t want to eat their food, even for the best of reasons. Even if you explain that you are on a diet, people still expect that you will eat food that has been made, and often it is polite and easier to simply go along with it. Anyway, having some food that you enjoy occasionally should be a happy thing to do, not something that should make you feel guilty for straying from your diet. This is the time when you will need to have two lines of defense to keep your diet plan in place. One is an active plan, such as taking the dog for a walk, going to the gym, actively doing anything so that food is not available. Having various things to do, such as working at a hobby in the shed, or doing some gardening can be your defense to sitting around and thinking about eating. The other plan is to have some food, but food that you have already organized to have available so that you will not be tempted to eat food that will only put on weight. You can keep a supply of fresh fruit on hand, or veggies to mix as a salad, or the ingredients for a low calorie highly nutritious drink. If you satisfy your food cravings with other food often enough you will lose the cravings after a while and begin to look forward to and enjoy the other types of food. This has been shown to be true many times, when people finally decide to give in to a craving and have some of that food, often they are disappointed that it really does not taste as exciting as they imagined it would be. Foods high in empty calories often taste just that – empty and highly flavored, but without the satisfying taste that good quality food has. Some foods which have food additives and flavor enhancers rely on these to make the food attractive to your taste buds. When you get used to eating food which is naturally full of flavor, these artificially flavored foods become less attractive and eventually they are not a distraction to your weight loss plans and diet.
